6 tips to get kids to take medication!

The struggle is most certainly real when it comes to giving medicine to kids. Check out these mom and pediatrician approved tips and tricks!

  1. Stay positive! Make sure you go into it with the right attitude. Don’t set yourself up for failure. Older kids will often respond well to encouragement and explanation. Younger kids will feed off how the parents are feeling. So stay positive!

  2. Allow kids to have some control! Explain why the medicine is important and how it will help them. Prepare them for what it might taste like and let them pick something to take afterwards. Allow children old enough to old the syringe or cup and take it themselves.

  3. Ask for help from your provider! Some medications taste better than others. If its really not working, you need to let your provider know and maybe you switch to something different.

  4. Trick the tastebuds! Most of the time pills can be crushed and mixed. Choose something extra sweet and tasty to hide bitter flavors. Our favorites are ice cream, chocolate syrup, maple syrup or yogurt. Another idea is to let your child suck on a popsicle before hand to numb and coat tastebuds.

  5. Rewards! Have a reward ready. Let them pick it in advance whether its a sticker, small toy or special treat. We all respond to positive feedback and rewards!

  6. Keep your cool and cheer them on! Stay positive and when they succeed cheer for them and give them a big hug! They just accomplished something scary and challenging. Now hopefully next will be easier.
